History

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in Newfoundland and Labrador

A National Field Worker initially introduced the Award Programme into several rural Newfoundland communities in 1972. However, it was not until 1974 when the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador formally initiated it in the province. During a royal visit, Premier Frank Moores pledged the support of the provincial government to the Award Program in this province as a gift to H.R.H, The Prince Phillip.

The Youth Services Division of the Provincial Government administered the Award Program, the Director of the Division was appointed the Executive Director and the division’s field staff delivered the program to the youth of the province.

In 1981 a volunteer provincial council was established under the guidance of several prominent businessmen along with the Director of Youth Services, Mr. Bill Wilson (Executive Director for the Award Program). From that point onward the Youth Services Division and the Provincial Council jointly delivered the Award Program in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Through the retirement of the Director of Youth Services, the Provincial Council has come to assume all responsibility for the Award Program in Newfoundland Labrador. However, the Provincial Government’s faith, goodwill and commitment to The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in this Province remains strong through an annual administrative grant from the Career, Employment and Youth Services Division, the involvement of the Minister of Human Resources Labour and Employment and the departments support staff, as well as the support of successive Premiers.
